Hey, you made it! Our Shuttle From Keflavík Airport AND Your First Iceland Road Trip Moment

Hey, you made it! Our Shuttle From Keflavík Airport AND Your First Iceland Road Trip Moment

Touchdown!! (In Iceland, needless to say).

You made it!

You survived the flight, dodged the crying baby in row 14, and now you're officially standing on lava-covered land (hopefully not right on the lava, though!).

A plane wing gliding over Reykjanes Peninsula, just minutes before your feet touch Icelandic ground.

But wait, where do you go from here? Who's picking you up? And how do you go from “just landed” to “behind the wheel of a graffiti-covered campervan with your playlist blasting”?

If your brain is foggy from jet lag and all you remember is “KuKu something something shuttle,” don’t worry. We've GOT you!

In this article, we’ll walk you through how the campervan pick‑up in Keflavík actually works, how to spot our friendly faces at the airport, and what to expect during your first hour in Iceland with KuKu Campers.

You don’t need to guess where to wait, how to pay for road tax (ouch, what even IS it?), or what happens if your flight is late: just keep reading.

Adventure begins at baggage claim (or maybe five minutes after). Let’s get rolling.

Arrival at Keflavík: First Steps After Your Flight

So, your flight just landed and Iceland greets you with that classic combo of cold air and volcanic vibes.

But before you start your epic Ring Road journey, there's one little quest you need to complete: finding your KuKu shuttle.

Once you've grabbed your bags and followed the “Exit to Iceland” signs (yep, that's literally what it says), head straight into the arrival hall.

Look around: to your right, there's a small kiosk. In front of you, you should see a Flybus counter.

And somewhere nearby? A blue KuKu sign waving in the air like a beacon of freedom. That’s us.

The Flybus counter at Keflavík Airport – not your ride, but a good landmark to spot while waiting

This is the meeting point for all Keflavík airport campervan shuttle pick-ups, and if you booked your free KuKu shuttle in advance, your name is already on the list.

One of our crew members will spot you, smile, and take you straight to the van of your dreams.

💡 Want to double-check if you’re on the list? Peek at your confirmation email: if it says “Free shuttle to KuKu office,” you're good to go.

But what if we’re not there yet? Don’t panic! Our shuttles run every hour from 8:00 to 18:00, and Keflavík traffic is… well, let’s call it creatively unpredictable.

If you don’t see us immediately, hang tight, grab a coffee, and we’ll show up before you finish your first Icelandic hot dog.

What If Your Flight Is Delayed or You Miss the Shuttle? (No Panic)

Look, we're gonna be real: flights get delayed. Luggage disappears for 20 minutes.

Sometimes you're stuck in the middle seat next to someone who thinks shoes are optional. Life happens.

Travelers waiting at Keflavík Airport arrivals hall, just a KuKu shuttle away from adventure.
Not you, hopefully (but, as we said, life happens...)

That’s why our KuKu shuttle isn’t a one-shot deal: we’re not the last bus out of town.

Our free airport shuttle leaves every hour on the hour, from 08:00 to 18:00.

That means: 08:00, 09:00, 10:00, and so on.

Simply put: if your plane lands at 15:45 and you’re standing there at 15:52 thinking “Where on earth is my KuKu ride?”, relax. We're NOT late. It's just scheduled for 16:00. We’re coming. Promise.

And if your flight is delayed and you miss the shuttle you were originally assigned to, we’ll automatically move you to the next one.

No need to panic, call us crying, or try hitchhiking across a lava field (honestly, been there, done that).

Just wait in the arrival hall, near the Flybus counter and the small kiosk, and keep an eye out for our big blue KuKu sign.

You can also let us know via phone if something’s off. But honestly? Just grabbing a coffee and chilling works 99% of the time.

We’ve got your back, even if Iceland Air doesn’t.

If You’re Not Taking the Shuttle (Totally Fine, But Read This)

Let’s clear something up: just because we have a shuttle, doesn’t mean you’re automatically on it.

During the booking process, we'll kiiiindly ask you to choose your pick-up option. You can either:

  • Select “Free shuttle to KuKu office”, meaning we pick you up at the airport
  • Or select “KuKu office”, meaning you plan to get here on your own
A flock of Icelandic taxis gathered around the famous silver Egg sculpture – just outside arrivals.
"Take me to KuKu, NOW!"

So if your booking confirmation says just “KuKu office”, that’s our cue to wait for you at our headquarters in Keflavík, not to come hunt you down at the arrivals gate.

You're free to make your way to us however you like: taxi, bus, magic carpet, your call.

That also means we’ll expect you at the agreed time for pick-up. Not earlier, not later, just on time so we can get you set up and rolling. Here's our exact address, in case your GPS decides to go all Viking on you:

📍 Klettatröð 19, 262 Reykjanesbær

But hey, what if you suddenly realize your confirmation says “KuKu office” and you were totally counting on the free shuttle?

No problem: just give us a call or shoot us an email and we’ll switch it for you. Quick fix. Zero drama. No extra charge.

At the KuKu Office: What Happens Next

Heeey there, you made it! Whether you hopped on our free shuttle or showed up in style on your own, welcome to the KuKu HQ in Keflavík, aka where the magic begins.

This is your official campervan check-in moment. But don’t worry: you won't find cold counters or grumpy agents. We have just cool vans, warm humans, and probably a few sheep-themed stickers lying around.

Here’s what usually happens (in no particular order, because we’re cool like that):

  • We say hi. Like, a proper hi. With eye contact and maybe a high five.
  • We check your documents. Driver’s license, booking confirmation, and ID, the usual suspects.
  • We go over your insurance. If you’re not sure which coverage you chose or want to upgrade, no problem. We can tweak your policy on the spot.
  • We talk deposits. If you have a valid credit card, no deposit is charged, we just pre-authorize it. If not? You’ll leave a security deposit via debit card or in cash (EUR, USD, or ISK accepted).
  • We explain the road tax. Icelandic law requires us to collect a small €11/day road tax. That’s across all rental companies, not just us.
A cozy campervan dinner setup with a candlelit pan, colorful seats and that signature KuKu charm.
Needless to say, this is NOT our office. But cool shot, isn't it?

Once the formalities are out of the way, we’ll give you a full van walkthrough, answer any burning questions (“Can I sleep next to a volcano?”), and hand over the keys.

Then… it’s just you, the van, and the whole island waiting for you.

Oh, and also: we highly recommend checking your fuel level, saving our contact info, and maybe setting up your navigation before driving off into the mist.

So... What’s the Deal with This Road Tax?

We mentioned it already, but let’s break it down properly, because no one likes surprise fees, even in Iceland.

By law, every rental vehicle in Iceland is subject to a €11 per day road tax. This isn’t a KuKu thing, but rather a government thing. And yes, every campervan company has to apply it.

Why? Because Iceland is literally a giant volcano trying to be a country. Roads here are constantly being built, repaired, rebuilt, and occasionally devoured by lava. The road tax helps cover that never-ending battle against nature.

Here’s the twist though: when this road tax was introduced, the government also reduced fuel taxes, which made gas prices drop by about 38%.

So even with the tax, you’re actually saving money if you drive a lot. It’s kind of a “win-win-if-you-drive-a-ton” situation.

The view from the driver’s seat as the Icelandic landscape opens up in golden light – your road trip starts now.
I'd pay all the tax in the world to drive here...

Common Questions Before Pick‑Up (Quick Clarifications)

We get it: you’re about to land in a lava-covered wonderland, and you’ve got a thousand tiny questions bouncing around your brain.

Let’s squash the most common ones right here, right now, KuKu-style.

Can You Pick Me Up at My Hotel?

Sure. But only if you’re staying in Keflavík.

Not Reykjavík. Not the Eastfjords. Not a secret cabin in the Highlands. Just Keflavík, the town near the airport where our HQ lives.

And even in that case, it will have to be:

  1. Within KuKu shuttle hours: 8:00 to 18:00
  2. Confirmed in advance, during booking or via email

If we’ve agreed to pick you up at your Keflavík accommodation, we’ll come get you after the shuttle stop at the airport, usually around :15 or :20 past the hour (depending on traffic, sheep crossings, and coffee strength).

If your confirmation still says “KuKu office” but you’d rather get picked up at your hotel in Keflavík, just reach out and we’ll update it.

Oh, and here's Keflavik, by the way!

I Thought I Booked the Shuttle, But My Confirmation Says “KuKu Office”! What Do I Do?

No stress!

It just means that when you booked, you selected “KuKu office” as your pick-up location. But hey, plans change. People grow.

If you’d rather hop on the free KuKu shuttle from the airport, just let us know as soon as possible and we’ll switch it for you.
No fees and zero drama, just more chill.

What Happens If My Flight Is Late?

We already covered this in detail earlier, but here's a friendly reminder:

Our shuttle leaves every hour on the hour between 8:00 and 18:00.

If your flight is delayed and you miss your original slot, no worries. You’ll just be moved to the next available shuttle. Grab a snack, charge your phone, and we’ll be there soon.
